The 2014 Roanoke Regional Writer Conference

If you have never been to one it is an overwhelming experience. I am trying to find the right words to describe it … imagine room after room filled with like-minded people but at the same time so completely different that it dazzles you. Instead of being intimidated by the differences you immediately connect because you have something in common: we all write.

As soon as our eyes meet, we are talking. The hallways were full of chatter and talk, the rooms filled with listeners and presenters, and in between the most precious of all: we helped advance each other. We exchanged tips, gave advice, connected people, shared our networks, and improved each other’s writing experiences.

We started Friday evening with a reception to network followed by speakers introductions and more. But the real deal was Saturday: from 830am till 530pm we were in and out of classes. Some classes we took as writers/bloggers, some classes we presented.

All classes were filled with tips, experiences, and honesty. Presenters spoke about what does not work, what they learned in the past few years, and how to avoid some of the mistakes they made.

At the end of the day, my head was spinning and so full with new information that I had trouble putting it all on paper. It might take a while …

If you were at RRWC, please leave your thoughts. And, if you are a writer/blogger than please join us next year. You will not regret it!

  1. Thank you for capturing the spirit, Alice. We’ve already started putting together next year’s lineup and we have some wonderful surprises looming for all of you. Six straight sellouts and next year a seventh. Get in line early to secure your seat.
