Potter should take over Disney

We are big Harry Potter fans here. We have all the books, the movies, and the behind the scene books.

Potter marathons are common in our household. Sometimes we watch in silence, sometimes we pay extra attention to the background designs or continuation mishaps, and sometimes the movie is on in the background while we re-read the books.

We have noticed a Potter takeover of Disney. For example:

  • Helena Ravenclaw, the Grey Lady, gave her voice to Disney’s Princess Merida in the Disney movie Brave.
  • Professor Sybill Patricia Trelawney gave her voice to Merida’s mother Queen Elinor in Brave.
  • Professor and Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts Rubeus Hagrid gave his voice to bring Lord Dingwall to life in Brave.
  • Molly Weasley (née Prewett), pure-blood witch and the matriarch of the Weasley family, gave her voice to the Witch in Brave.
  • Headmaster and Professor Severus Snape became Absolem the Caterpillar in the Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” joined by Death Eater and pure-blood witch Bellatrix Lestrange who became the Red Queen.
  • Madam Undersecretary Professor Dolores Jane Umbridge turned into fairy Knotgrass in Disney’s “Maleficent” and was as clueless there about children as she was at Hogwarts.
  • And in the latest Disney version of Cinderella, Bellatrix returns to assume the role of Fairy Godmother.

I propose a full takeover of all Disney movies and recommend for

  1. Tarzan to be replaced by Headmaster and Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore as his loud voice is much better than Tarzan’s. I also like to see his swing from tree to tree.
  2. Ginevra Molly “Ginny” Potter (née Weasley) to doll down Ariel, the Little Mermaid. Ginny can show her that feet aren’t everything and teach her how to fly.
  3. Tom Marvolo Riddle, later known as Lord Voldemort, to resist evil as Pinocchio. If he refuses, make him a donkey on Pleasure Island!
  4. Buckbeak, the Hippogriff, to replace the cute but clumsy Dumbo to teach those elephants a much-needed lesson in humility and balance.
  5. Dobby, the house-elf, to rise from the dead to create some havoc as Aladdin’s Genie.

Do you have any favourite Potter characters? Which Disney character do you think they should take over and improve?

  1. I am a Potter virgin, sorry. I guess I don’t know what I am missing. The closest I came to reading the books was when I bought the set as a Xmas gift for my niece…oh, maybe that was the vampire series ones; not sure 🙂

  2. I am fan of harry potter. But I think that Tarzan is something different and if someone else will come and take over Tarzan… then where the tarzan will go? as it’s favorite of my daughter 🙂

  3. I am a fan of Harry Potter novels. I wonder sometimes about the investment a company makes, especially it seems Disney, in using characters for their amusement rides. This is a huge investment, but Harry Potter will not be popular forever, something else will come around and remove it from the top spot.

As for me, I am particular to Professor Snape, he is my favorite character and Alan Rickman portrayed him perfect in the movies.

    1. I am a huge Rickman fan too. Nobody plays a tender-bitter heart like him. And he makes those robes work. They swish and flow behind him.

As for the investment, I agree. Characters come and go. I guess if the new generation becomes to unattached they will update all those rides? That costs a lot of money so then the park fees will go up again.

  4. I have to plead total ignorance of Harry Potter and that’s a difficult admission for a serious two book a week reader. But thanks for filling me in. Of course, I can’t offer an opinion on a takeover, but since you seem to know all about it, I, as fellow BHBer, will support you.

  5. Well Alice, if Potter characters take over Tarzan, as long as swinging on the vines would still be in the story, it would get my support. I didn’t have a clue about the Potter series so appreciated your post.

  6. Cute post. I really enjoyed the Harry Potter books, but cannot remember all the characters. I cannot support a total takeover. Angela Lansbury has to stay as Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast.

  7. Scrooge McDuck and I are as tight as can be: WE’LL do the taking over, thank you very much, and you’re way too late if you think you can stop us.

  8. I’m working my way through the books, at my daughter’s request. I just finished #3 so I’ll hold off on choosing a favorite character just yet. But HP seems to be taking over the world, so why not Disney too?

  9. Ahhhh… You have touched upon a sensitive topic for those of us who are Voice Actors. It seems certain studios feel that celebrity names attract audiences to their animated films, even though, polled audiences say it doesn’t make a difference. Some of the actors, Robin Williams, for example, are stellar, but others like Brad Pitt are not so great. We all realize the field is competitive but they don’t even allow us to compete. I haven’t heard these character voices so I can’t comment. And it looks like for followers of Harry Potter hearing these voices does have an impact. But I do know many characters would have been more memorable if voice actors and not screen actors performed the roles.

    1. Had not thought about that, however, I was thinking more along the lines of character, guts, maturity.

A great voice does not have to come from a famous person. Sometimes it can actually hinder to know the voice and the roles they are famous for as actors.

  10. Hey, Alice,

Interesting idea, which may be possible in the far future with either more corporate mergers or if all these properties were to be released into the public domain.

I would propose Firenze the Centaur taking over Philoctetes’ role in Hercules, played by Danny Devito in the movie.
